Textual Criticism

Aland, Kurt, Barbara Aland, and Erroll F. Rhodes. The Text of the New Testament: An Introduction to the Critical Editions and to the Theory and Practice of Modern Textual Criticism. Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1995.

Black, David Alan. New Testament Textual Criticism: A Concise Guide. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 1994. If you are completely new to this area of study and desire a concise overview, this is an excellent resource.

Brotzman, Ellis R., and Eric J. Tully. Old Testament Textual Criticism: A Practical Introduction. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2016.

*Metzger, Bruce M., and Bart D. Ehrman. The Text of the New Testament: Its Transmission, Corruption, and Restoration. 4th ed. New York: Oxford University Press, 2005. An excellent overview of both the history and practice of this discipline. It would serve every pastor if he would, at some point, make it a priority to read this book.

*Metzger, Bruce M. A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament. 2nd ed. Peabody, MA: Hendrickson, 2005. This fascinating resource is vital whether you’re working with the Greek text or seeking to understand textual variants mentioned in the footnotes to your English Bible. Metzger comments on the textual variants in the fourth edition of The Greek New Testament by the United Bible Societies (UBS 4), published in 1993.

Porter, Stanley E., and Andrew W. Pitts. Fundamentals of New Testament Textual Criticism. Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 2015. More detailed than Black, more accessible than Metzger.

*Wegner, Paul D. Student's Guide to Textual Criticism of the Bible: Its History, Methods and Results. Westmont, IL: IVP Academic, 2006. A thorough (300+ pages) but very readable overview of textual criticism that covers both testaments. For those working with original languages, an outstanding, detailed, accessible overview.
