Homiletics

*Chapell, Bryan. Christ-Centered Preaching: Redeeming the Expository Sermon. 3rd ed. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker, 2018. This is simply the best homiletics textbook we’re aware of. Along with treating all the elements that go into producing sermons, the final section of the book sets forth a redemptive approach to preaching Christ-centered messages.

Griffiths, Jonathan I. Preaching in the New Testament: An Exegetical and Biblical-Theological Study. NSBT. Downers Grove, IL: IVP, 2017. Unlike most books on preaching that tend to be heavy on methodology and light on theology, this book provides a biblical-theological overview of the preaching task. Very helpful reflection to remind the pastor just what he is engaged in.

Lloyd-Jones, D. Martyn. Preaching and Preachers. 40th anniversary ed. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2012. A classic work providing a wealth of wisdom, insight, and motivation from one of the great preachers of the 20th century. The pastor would do well to revisit this book regularly.

Logan, Samuel T. The Preacher and Preaching: Reviving the Art in the Twentieth Century. Phillipsburg, NJ: P&R, 1986. An excellent collection of essays on all aspects of the preaching task, from the preacher himself, to the content of preaching, and the manner of preaching. The opening chapter by J.I. Packer entitled “Why Preach?” is the single best essay on preaching we’re aware of.

Stott, John R. W. Between Two Worlds: The Art of Preaching in the Twentieth Century. Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1982. Another classic text. Provides perhaps the best treatment of the theology of preaching of any homiletics text.
