NT Introductions

See the three dictionaries in various parts of the New Testament corpus listed above under "Dictionaries and Encyclopedias."  These are outstanding collections of articles covering introductory issues and much more.

*Beale, G. K., and Benjamin L. Gladd. The Story Retold: A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the New Testament. Downers Grove, IL: IVP, 2020. This unique introduction explores the NT in light of the history of redemption, and considers each book not only on its own terms, but specifically with regard to the OT context that gave rise to it. Filled with pictures and illustrations, the book is attractive, accessible, and illuminating. An excellent companion to Carson and Moo (see below).

*Carson, D. A., and Douglas J. Moo. An Introduction to the New Testament. 2nd ed. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2008. An outstanding overview of introductory issues, particularly historical and cultural ones. An excellent overview of introductory issues. Shorter and easier to use than Guthrie.

DeSilva, David A. An Introduction to the New Testament: Contexts, Methods & Ministry Formation. 2nd ed. Downers Grove, IL: IVP, 2018.

Guthrie, Donald. New Testament Introduction. 4th ed. Leicester, England: Apollos, 1990. Many pastors will still own this classic work. Given its subject matter and age, it will by definition be somewhat dated, but on central issues of introduction, this weighty work is still useful.

Köstenberger, Andreas J., L. Scott Kellum, and Charles L. Quarles. The Cradle, the Cross, and the Crown: An Introduction to the New Testament. Nashville: B&H Academic, 2016. An up-to-date and user-friendly volume with helpful pedagogical aids. Covers much the same territory as Carson/Moo, but in a bit less depth.

Kruger, Michael J. A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the New Testament: The Gospel Realized. Wheaton, IL: Crossway, 2016. This project produced by the faculty of RTS spends less time on traditional issues of special introduction and more on individual NT books’ message and theology.

McDonald, Lee Martin, and Stanley E. Porter. Early Christianity & Its Sacred Literature. Peabody, MA: Hendrickson, 2001. Carefully locates the NT within its historical and cultural matrix.
