Biblical Theology

General/Introduction/Method

*Alexander, T. Desmond, Brian S. Rosner, D.A. Carson, and Graeme Goldsworthy. New Dictionary of Biblical Theology. Downers Grove, IL: IVP, 2000. This remarkable book is divided into three sections: a section of articles on fundamental issues of biblical theology; a section of articles examining each book of the Bible from a biblical-theological perspective; and a final section of over 140 articles on a wide range of biblical themes. A phenomenal resource, this book should constitute a building block of every pastor’s library.

*Carson, D.A., ed. New Studies in Biblical Theology. Downers Grove, IL: IVP, 1995. This series of biblical-theological studies range from treatments of particular books (e.g., Leviticus, Isaiah) to themes across the canon (e.g., money, missions, temple). A master Scripture index for all of these volumes, along with review for volumes through 2018, can be found at: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/new-studies-in-biblical-theology/

*___________. Kingdom Through Covenant: A Biblical-Theological Understanding of the Covenants. Wheaton, IL: Crossway, 2018. This ambitious book explores the biblical covenants as providing the underpinnings of the Bible’s unfolding storyline. The authors’ proposal of “progressive covenantalism,” which accounts both for continuities in God’s dealings with his people as well as for discontinuities (especially in the new covenant), assumes a mediating position between the two poles of covenant theology and dispensationalism. Although the book’s argument would have been sharpened (and no doubt strengthened) by more detailed exegesis of NT texts, this book has advanced the church’s understanding of how the Bible fits together in important and pastorally helpful ways.

*Goldsworthy, Graeme. According to Plan: The Unfolding Revelation of God in the Bible. Downers Grove, IL: IVP, 2002. A wonderful introduction to biblical theology by one of its leading practitioners in recent decades. The first part of the book addresses issues foundational to biblical theology (revelation, Scripture, relationship between the testaments, Christ’s centrality to Scripture). The second part of the book walks through the biblical storyline and addresses key themes as they appear across the span of Scripture and contribute to the theological message of Scripture.

*Vos, Geerhardus. Biblical Theology: Old and New Testaments. Eugene, OR: Wipf and Stock, 2003. A classic treatment from the theologian appropriately considered the father of Reformed biblical theology. The only downside is that Vos’s treatment concludes with the gospels.
